Jefferson's Ferry Creative Quillers Group Dazzle with Creative Cups 2017 Entry

South Setauket, NY…March 31, 2017 … The members of the Creative Quillers group at Jefferson's Ferry, A Life Plan Community showed their mettle and skills recently when their handcrafted brassiere earned the highest bid at auction for the Creative Cups 2017 project. The Creative Cups auction benefits the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, a network of volunteers who provide services, support and information about the disease. Creative Cups participants, including the Creative Quillers, designed and built original works of art using bras. The bras were then exhibited and auctioned at a Gala reception. The Jefferson's Ferry bra held the distinguished position as the last live auction of the night. The spirited bidding raised $1,300, more money than any other bra that evening. The proceeds will help fund a mammogram program.

Jefferson's Ferry resident Janet Hovnanian designed the coveted bra, which was festooned with dozens of handmade quilled flowers. The quilling group, who range in age from 16 (Janet's granddaughter) to 92 years of age, contributed to the design by making the colorful flowers; Janet then assembled the bra with the intricate flower appliques. In all, the group spent 178 hours creating their winning entry. Many of the quillers are Jefferson's Ferry residents; others live in the larger community.

Quilling is the centuries old art of the coiling and shaping of narrow paper strips to create a design. During the Renaissance, nuns and monks would roll gold-gilded paper remnants trimmed during the bookmaking process, and use them to decorate religious objects. Quilling later became a pastime of American colonists, who added quilling to household items such as candle sconces and trays as home decorations.

"Our residents are extremely committed to a wide variety of community service projects and philanthropic endeavors," said Jefferson's Ferry President and CEO Robert E. Caulfield. "We couldn't be more proud of Janet and the Creative Quillers. This kind of advocacy and involvement is a hallmark of the overall vibrancy and enthusiasm of our community."
